What is the difference between nutrition & nutrients?
•Nutrients-The
substances found in feed/food materials
which are necessary for the maintenance, production, reproduction, growth &
development & health of animals
or
•Nutrients
-Specific elements or compounds digested, absorbed, and metabolized to support
life’s processes
•Species
specific
Physiological state specific
•There
are six major classes of nutrients: Carbohydrate, Protein, Fat,
Vitamin, Mineral & Water.
•These
nutrient classes can be categorized as
Ømacro
nutrients (needed in relatively large amounts) or
Ømicronutrients
(needed in smaller quantities).
The macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats , proteins, and water. The micronutrients are minerals and vitamins.
•The macronutrients (excluding water) provide energy, which is measured in
joules or kilocalories .
•Nutrition-The
series of process by which on organism takes in assimilates feed for promoting
growth & replacing injured tissues or
Nutrition- Study of processes in which an animal consumes, digests, absorbs, and metabolizes feedstuff components to promote maintenance and productive functions
•Carbohydrates
and proteins provide 17 kJ (4 kcal) of energy per gram
•Fats provide 37 kJ (9 kcal) per gram.
•
Vitamins, minerals, and water do not
provide energy, but are necessary for other reasons.
